Spring Fling KidLit Entry 2023

Hi! I’m participating in Ciara O'Neal and Kaitlyn Sanchez's Spring Fling Kidlit Contest for the first time and I’m excited to share my entry inspired by the very unique spring we’re having here in Los Angeles. Thanks for reading!

Spring in LA

by Lindsay Dommell

“This city isn’t built for rain!”

Peter didn’t know exactly what his mom meant but he knew he agreed. It never rained in Los Angeles and now it would not. stop. raining.

Peter was tired of sticky raincoats,

soaked shoes,

recess indoors,

cancelled playdates.

And now he had to run 30 feet through a monsoon to retrieve the backpack he’d forgotten in the car.

Peter sulked in the doorway. It was now or never.

He leapt off the top step to an immediate “SPLASH.” Water seeped into his tennis shoes and soaked his hair as he raced to the car and back. A flash of green caught his eye and he paused, listening to trees sway too close to power lines and fat raindrops flood his street. He looked down at bright green grass poking through the cement beneath him.

Peter smiled. “I’m going to miss this when it’s gone.”
